Bird Flu

Bird Flu

The much avian flu, as per reports of the World Health Organization (WHO) states that 27 countries have been affected including India by this disease. Within a week, more than one lakh chickens had died mysteriously in Nawapur taluka of Maharastra's Nandurbar district. Accordingly, dead birds were sent to Bhopal's animal discase laboratory and it then revealed the presence of the H5NI virus. The World Health Organization has said that in 2003, H5NI has been reported in 170 people. Scientists fear that H5NI may exchange genes with human viruses for close contact with live and diseased poultry and also move from people to people through cough and sneezes. animal husbandry officials are also not aware of how this virus has entered India.

The West Bengal Government has issued instructions to all districts to keep alert and Animal Husbandry officials are informed immediately to be alert as and when required if any domestic and wild animal or livestock behaves abnormally or shows signs of sickness.

H5NI virus spreads to humans by the vapors from mucus and droppings of infected birds. It can spread also through the movement of live birds from one farm to another farm, through contaminated vehicles, clothes, and equipment, etc.

Symptoms like high fever, cold, running nose, and difficulty in breathing are noted in the affected people. Cooking at 70 degrees or above kills the virus. People should avoid; (1) raw and partially cooked eggs eating, (2) Dead or culled birds to be packed in plastic bags and buried; (3) and the affected and must be disinfected with lime and phenyl.

Currently, there is no effective vaccine for humans. The WHO has asked Governments to stockpile vaccines well as well as antivirus drugs; it takes more than six months to produce a vaccine from eggs. However, scientists are looking at methods that do not require eggs.

The WHO has urged all countries to develop preparedness and to keep adequate stockpile antiviral drugs nationally for use at the start of a pandemic like bird flu.
